Just a note to let you know how the Endowment is moving forward now and where we hope to be when we're all looking down from above (hopefully none are looking up!). Much has been accomplished since 1985 and much support has been given to the Clubs of North Carolina in that time frame. I've only been around the past eight years of those nearly thirty as a trustee and possibly have a couple more years to serve before stepping aside and gladly open the doors for others.
The Endowment was established by Joe Weatherspoon and Doug Council to give a diverse supporting team of six trustees from each district an opportunity to rotate off every three years. The Chair served for one year and could only repeat itself one term. They were true believers in democracy and avoiding autocratic rule.
The Endowment has struggled at times getting the support needed to survive. When I came on board we were in a moratorium on grants. And a few years back, there was even some consideration to give the funds to Sertoma Inc. as a named grant to Camp Sertoma giving the control to S.I. We reduced our board size and re-dedicated ourselves to keep the Endowment going for the needed support of the North Carolina clubs.
I have had the honor to serve with some of the most dedicated Sertomans on the board as trustees and officers. From knowing nothing, these guys have taught me much, and I have much still to learn about the ins and outs of Sertoma and the Endowment.
One very important thing I have learned from Sertoma and IRS classes on 501(c)3 non profits, is that we are a public entity. The money we manage belongs to the people (you) and we have a fiduciary duty to manage it responsibly. The most recent IRS class emphasized transparency, conflict of interest and establishing trust from the people we serve.
What I see in the future (from above, I hope) is a million dollar fund that will give much more needed funds back to our local communities. I hope you will join us in support of our local clubs. I, along with the entire board, look forward to serving you.
Very Sincerely,
Jim Womble
Chair, NC Sertoma Endowment Fund, Inc.
